Learn. Change. Grow.
Libraries have always provided communities with what they’ve needed most: a place to…
• gather and share stories
• get lost in imagination
• explore new ideas, and
• find new perspective on the world
Today, Calgary Public Library continues to connect people with the joy, wonder, and potential of knowledge. We’re transforming what we do, and how we do it, to keep pace with shifting priorities and new forms of communication and information. But why we do what we do has never changed: we continuously strive to do better for and with the community and continuously evolve to meet new challenges.
On January 12, experience an Exclusive Calgary Public Library Employee Event where we will be joining together to celebrate the Library’s accomplishments and those who make them happen, as we also look to the future and continue to learn, change, and grow together. Register now in Self-Service.
Don’t Forget!
Submit your Library Story Form to the “!” bowl by the end of day today, December 9. You can find Library Story Forms at your location or email your story about an extraordinary Library colleague to: marcom@calgarylibrary.ca.
Library STARs
The STAR Awards brought the extravagant 80s to Telus Spark on November 25. Fire, fluorescent colours, and fabulous hits of the decade filled the air. Nearly 400 staff members wandered the space in amazing costumes—the Library’s versions of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Slash, and even a Ghostbuster were in attendance! Library team members enjoyed the chance to catch up with colleagues from all over the system. The HR Team, along with the planning team: Jackie Flowers, Trevor Myers, Amanda Hafeli Thompson, designed the evening to include lots of time for staff to visit with each other.
During the ceremony emceed by Board Member Avnish Mehta (nearly unrecognizable in his guise as Axel Rose), staff were honoured for their excellent work. Rising Star Awards were presented to exceptional employees who have worked for the Library for less than three years, recognizing Kelsi Atkinson, Allison Streit, and Michele Wellsby. Distinguished Career Awards were presented to employees who have worked for the Library for 15 years or more, acknowledging the remarkable contributions of Olga Tanailova and Gerry Burger-Martindale.
A full list of winners will be posted on the STAR link under HR’s section of Sharepoint soon.
TIP: Celebrate your colleagues’ excellence by nominating them for recognition! To nominate a coworker, simply visit The Kitchen, click on the "+" button on the upper toolbar, and choose Peer Recognition Award.

MRU Practicum Student
We’re delighted that our first practicum student will join us as part of a growing partnership with Mount Royal University. Danya is a student in Child Studies Program with an Early Learning major. She’s an active Library patron with a passion for supporting children and making a positive impact during their critical developmental years.
Danya will create activities for staff and volunteers to implement in Early Learning Centres. She will also research best practices for active play as well as create inclusive environments for families—spaces that are culturally sensitive, support special needs populations, and more.
She will work from Central Library and will visit the Library’s Early Learning Centres throughout her practicum placement, which takes place from January–April, 2017.
Dayna will connect with patrons, staff, and volunteers at community libraries in the new year. If you see her, make sure to talk with her—not only will you help Dayna succeed in her practicum, but she has a lot to share.
